Recorded over two long weekends in November 1995. The second weekend ran over schedule. Fink attributed the delay to weather.

   Words on file

Captain here, sir. One small change:
we'll be setting down in Roanoke.
A tech stop, twenty minutes down,
no need to stand or find your coat.
The winds aloft came in a little short,
and the fuel down there runs cheap,
   and Teterboro bills like Teterboro.
Call it books I like to keep.

It's not a necessary stop, sir.
   It's only one we need.

My first officer will step inside
and check the weather for himself.
You'll see him walking with some purpose.
A thorough man. I trained him well.
The line man's going to ask how much.
I'll tell him a hundred, nothing more:
enough to make the ramp fee vanish,
enough to sign for at the door.

It's not a necessary stop, sir.
   It's only one we need.

No, sir, the engines are fine,
and no, not weather, not as such.
He saw the weather. It was good.
He thanks the desk a bit too much.
He's lingering at the counter now,
the way men do when they're at ease.

There's seventeen feet of carpet, sir,
from the cockpit to the back.
I walked it once. You weren't aboard.
   I've stopped in Roanoke since.

Here he comes with the fuel slip,
   a hundred gallons, Roanoke,
walking like a man of means,
whistling like he heard a joke.
The door comes up, the engines turn.
You'll be in Atlanta by two.

It's not a necessary stop, sir.
   It's only one we need.

He's brought a coffee for the road.
