    Words on file
Second week in the right seat,
show at four, the captain on my left,
the FBO couch, the free urn steaming,
and I was new, and I had two.
He filled a cup and held it
the way you'd hold a hand you wouldn't play,
carried it out across the ramp
and left it, full, beside the nose.

    Nobody said, and nobody says.
The door is for the airline boys.
The curtain's for the rest of us.
    Nobody said.

Palm Beach, two hours and twenty,
four of them knee to knee in a cabin
too low for a man to stand.
Off the Carolinas the coffee came due.
I ran the fuel, I ran the time,
and one more number I won't say.
"Your airplane," I told the captain.
He took it and he didn't turn his head.

    Nobody said, and nobody says.
The door is for the airline boys.
The curtain's for the rest of us.
    Nobody said.

    Four faces and one curtain,
and a cabin made for kneeling.
    The client moved his briefcase
off the cushion by the door
and drew the curtain on its little rail,
    thin as an alibi,
and four men took up reading
like they'd paid good money for it.

Bless the engines and their noise,
    bless whoever hung the rail.
I studied the ceiling two inches up
    and called it below minimums.

    Nobody said, and nobody says.
The door is for the airline boys.
The curtain's for the rest of us.
    Nobody said.

    Taxiing in at Palm Beach,
the client leaned up between the seats
    and handed me the paper,
still open to the same page.
